Creativity Takes Courage - My Interview with Jeanne Oliver

Friends, it's another good day. Right?
I got my hair trimmed -- my hair girl, I can't stop loving her. She can be so bratty to me and I lu-hu-huv it. I'm, "Yo Brooke, how much are you cutting off back there?" and she's all, "Don't worry about it...you'll see in a minute."

THIS is the hair girl I have dreamed of, because I NEVER know what to do with my mop! I walk in saying, "I dunno...it's too something. I'm just -- frustrated with it. Maybe it should be just a little shorter. Or a lot? Maybe I should be patient and grow it longer?" I always want someone to tell me what to do. And she does. Only minus the telling part.

Silas and I trekked to Warsaw and had lunch with my friend Stephanie. Silas realized on the way that Stephanie is the most "prettiest" name. He may have even thrown "beautiful" out there. His pretend kids right now are named Sandy and Roxy ("Sandy's a girl, Roxy is a boy") but I'm feeling like Stephanie isn't far behind. And of course Charles is still his main squeeze. He harped at me about handling Charles too roughly "He's just a tiny baby! Don't do that or you will choke his neck!" then moments later admitted that Charles is turning 5 next month.

I'm on to you, Charles. You're really milking this "baby" thing. It's unbecoming.

All along the drive I kept spotting those splayed-out tulips, singing their guts out. Did you notice them? Swear. Go look. You'll see exactly what I mean.

And now, an announcement:

I'm Jeanne Oliver's May interview for her series "Creativity Takes Courage". If you're so inclined, you can watch a solid hour of the two of us yucking it straight up. We had a blast, as you will see. We've been online buds for years, but the day we filmed was the first time we had ever spoken. I just watched the full hour and it turned out super fun. I fretted that I didn't give her enough substance, because all I could remember was partying it up. I told Cory that I sometimes forgot we were filming it. His response, "That's not a good place to be..." (I"m now fretingt about the following: Why is my tooth so crooked? Didn't know. Why are my lips invisible? Shoulda worn lipstick. Why did my computer cause an echo? Two Shannans for the price of one.)

It turns out, we did capture a lot of important stuff in between our giggling. We talked about my family's journey, adoption, blogging, decorating, Robert, and yes, chips and salsa.

  1. You are the most creative girl in the world, so the moment I have one spare hour, well, I am all over that like guacamole is over tortilla chips.

You are a star. Shine Bright.

I freaking LOVE Silas' imaginary friends. And there is a baby? I could not love that child more. Once again, I am on my way to kidnap him! Watch out in your driveway for my car. Happy Wednesday.

  4. Had to laugh at your banter with your 'hair-girl'. I LOVE mine, but sometimes I get ministry hair cuts...as in she has a lot on her heart to pour out and she keeps cutting and trimming and............ I have been known to suggest that she just put the scissors down and keep talking! :-)

  5. Gah! My two favorite bloggers in one video. So awesome. My internet has developed narcolepsy and sometimes falls asleep for periods of time so I was {not so} patiently waiting for the video to fully load before attempting to watch the whole thing. But then I got tired of waiting because it's overrated and decided I'd watch whatever the internet would allow me. It's inspiring to hear ya'll talk about how you felt like a weirdo when you started blogging because that's how I feel, even though I love writing and know it is a good outlet for me. Now I'll wait for another few minutes to load and then another few minutes and another few minutes....

  7. Great interview, but I need to know why the clock behind you didn't change time....messing with my mind.

    1. Hahaha! Now you know my secret. That clock is from my the school I went to growing up. It has to be hard-wired to work and unfortunately, we didn't know exactly where we wanted it when they built our house. So it's just decorative. And it's always, always 10:25! Twice a day it's right. :) The little clock on the green table in the entry is always 4:00. We have issues.

    2. Hahahahaha! I would do something like that. I am negotiating a chalk board out of one of the old schools where I taught that they are tearing down for the house my husband and I are building.
      Thanks for easing my mind.
Now I think you should change the time and see how long it takes Cory or anyone else to notice!

  8. My hubs was actually away tonight, and there was nothing good on tv, so I popped over here to find this goodness! Oh Shannon, I just loved the interview. There is just something about being able to see your face and hear your voice that makes you even more of a real person, and not just these lovely and profound letters on my screen. You in motion. Way cool. And I just want to say too, that I struggle with being brave, and I have these hangups about not knowing what it should look like... like I want to know I won't fail/fall if I dip my toe in... and I want God to show me other people that are doing the brave hard things so I can do my own-- I Need to see what IT LOOKS LIKE. My husband is great about being the one out front, making the waves, challenging the norms, while I just hang on to his coat tails. But I want more for me, and for us. And you? God has been using your story to show me, "See? It is one step at a time. One decision at a time. And I am Faithful." And I just see His fingerprints all over your story and it makes me brave too. Sending a virtual hug your way tonight.

  10. I loved the interview! I always like matching a voice to a face. I had to pause it a bunch of times to deal with kids. Here's a fun game - pause while it's playing and almost every time, you, Jeanne or both of you had a funny face. I kept changing where it was paused until you both had a funny.

I love reading your family's story - you inspire me. And I also want to come sit in your lovely kitchen.

  14. Did I mention I did an in-home hack job on my hair a good month ago? Turns out, love it! Very unusual to have a positive experience when I do such things.

Silas makes me giggle. What a cutie! I have received similar judgement from my nephew recently... It's kind of hilarious.

  15. I have been reading your blog for years, but it was such a delight to see and hear you talk about what God has done and is doing in your life. I am an adoptive mom, too, and felt so much the way you described when encountering infertility, like I just want my kids wherever they are! :-) Thanks for sharing the video link!
