In Sickness

Don't people always say that after a while, an old married couple begins to look like one another? Well, I'll be honest, I hope that isn't the case. Cory is handsome, but I can't quite picture myself with all that facial hair.

Here's what I will say - on Thursday evening, somewhere between 7:00 and 7:20, we both came down with a fierce cold. Cory's hit first and I told him he sounded like Kermit the Frog. I scoffed. Yes, I did. And ten minutes later? Well, I got what I deserved. Kermie bit me on the rear, so to speak.

It's a strange form of marital solidarity, to be sure. It's also highly inconvenient when there are three small children to be taken care of.

Going in to bed that night, I reminded him "Just remember, we have the exact, same cold." (He was already ratcheting up the whining and moaning...) His response? "I think mine are always a little worse than yours."

That's when I knew it was going to be a long couple of days.

As it turns out, we are a pretty good team, even in sickness. We have taken turns napping, I made soup, Cory made a run for more tissues and Nyquil. We spent last evening watching Valentine's Day from our posts at opposite ends of the couch, our hair all askew, a makeshift grocery sack trashcan in between.

We snacked on popcorn and watermelon and then wheat crackers with sliced salami and provolone. We ate for texture, since neither of us could taste a darn thing.

We ignored the mess around us that we were both too foggy to care about.

Every quarter hour or so, one of us would randomly announce (again) our worst symptom. "My head is pounding." "My ears are so plugged up, I can't hear anything!" "I think I have a fever..."

The credits rolled, and we staggered in to bed, a box of tissues on each side. I reached my foot over to find his and in no time flat, we were both sound asleep.

  3. Cute in its own right---at least you're finding the solidarity! Definitely hope it passes quickly and you're both feeling better soon. Maybe this will strengthen that immune system right up for the coming cold and flu season---here's hoping! Don't dare worry about the state of the house this weekend :)

  6. Hey there, sickies! I hope this note finds you feeling better. Good to hear that you were able to sleep soundly. Did you take the night-time sniffling sneezing coughing aching stuffy-head fever so you can rest medicine?

    Rest well!

  7. I'm so thankful I've yet to experience such a journey - I don't think Al and I have ever been sick at the same time.........I'm okay with that :)

Hope you guys are on the mend soon - what's the deal with all this stuff occuring before Sunday? I've been feeling a bit overloaded with the presence of the evil one lately. Could it be that we're on a mission to be radically changed and willing to share that with others is tickin him off a bit?

Count the cost. That keeps rollin in my mind....I'm hoping I'll see you both tomorrow....try to out do each other on drinking water - flush that nasty stuff through you!

    Hang in there,
    Heather C.

  10. Even in sickness you are an amazing writer, and I found myself totally drawn into your livingroom...sitting in the middle, holding the makeshft trash can, and reminding you that fluids are best!!! I love your sweetness and am so glad that you have such an amazing and supportive hubby. I hate being sick and having to continue on being a full time Mommy, I am glad you each are supporting the other! Hope you feel better soon!

  11. I'm sorry you're sick. :( But I have to admit I'm a little nervous....7:20 on Thursday?!? that was approximately 6 hours after I left. Is that in my future? I hope not, I have too much painting to do!

  14. Hope you are feeling better. And, I can sympathize... I think my hubby's sicknesses are ALWAYS worse than mine... even when they really, really, REALLY aren't.

  15. Sweet story. WOw, I can't believe that you got sick like 10 minutes later. Good that you announced that you had the same thing, hah.
Once when I was 7 months pregnant I opened up the trunk to our Pinto station wagon(loved that car) a 2 litre glass bottle of coke came rolling out, busted and slashed my leg. Myneighbor cleaned up the mess and I drove my 18 month old to her grandparents then drove to the hospital for stitches. I think I stopped and picked up my hubby. The next day we all came down with the tummy bug.
Not fair as I had two things. Hah, what you remember. Get better please.

  16. That happens to Hubs and I all the time. First him. Then me. And of course I do the roll eyes thing thinking oh don't be a baby. Then wham, I get it. Sometimes worse. But I wouldn't change it. I love growing old together.

    Feel better.

  20. Men's cold are worse. A proven fact. Once Glenny and I had the stomach flu at the same time. Not fun in a house that has only one bathroom. Sounds like ya'll are doing ok. I actaully had the thought of driving there with soup today, and figured I'd freak you out, so I didn't. Get better soon - xo

  22. Call me a hopeless sentimentalist, but I found that whole scene to be sweetly adorable. I suppose it's your words. I love your words.

    So nice to meet you,
    Angie

  23. I find your story to be oddly romantic. Does that make me strange? And of course Cory's cold is slightly worse. I think it's the testosterone that makes it worse for them. Poor guy! I hope you are both better soon.

  24. Been there, done that, right down to the "grocery bag trashcan". Hope you're both feeling better, I don't think there is anything else worse than a cold or the flu when the weather is warm. You're only supposed to get sick when it's cold and dreary, right?

  26. Sorry you're both sick -but- this was funny... cute funny.

I loved your last little foot-thing-good-night.

We do that, too. And often will find ourselves holding each other's hand - to fall asleep.

    Hope your feeling better soon.

  27. Wonderful post, but the sickness is dreadful & it is very very very hard to cure completely. Take excellent care of yourselves, as you can think you're well, then BAM it's back. xx's

  32. This post made me laugh, not because you are sick, I am sorry about that- but, because that is so how my husband and I are. But, there are also those times that I am sick, and suddenly my husband happens to feel the same "symptoms", but nothing ever comes of it... Last time that happened I teased him about having the same "sickness" as me, and within a couple of hours he was much worse than me. It just cemented this pattern of ours. Ha Ha

I hope that you are both feeling better!

  38. What do you mean you took turns napping? Calvin would love the chance to take over the household for a few days. And I am sure he would do a super job of it! We will be praying for the two of you. Don't forget the vitamin C and zinc!! And a vicks rub is always a good thing.

  39. That is perfectly sweet! And your working together, even when sick, is to be admired. I love your gentle reminder to him about having the same cold ;) I also think a cup of tea, especially Constant Comment, can help make anyone feel better. I hope you both feel better soon and the Kermit cold skips right over the littles.
