Me in Real Time

First things first: I'm a little weepy over Jim and Pam's wedding. I don't know what it is about me, I always tear up when I see good people - real people - in love and making it official. I'm a big wedding crier, which contradicts the fact that I'm not much of an everyday, garden variety crier. At my own wedding I just barely choked up. I was smiling so big that my cheeks were sore. That is my wish for every bride.

What does all of this have to do with mums?

Nothing at all.

But aren't they pretty?

Yeah, it's Fall. I've mostly come to terms with it.

In a gesture of goodwill, I ushered in the season by making pumpkin cupcakes late last night. Brooke posted them on her blog and it just so happened that I had picked up a random can of pumpkin the day before. Serendipitous.

Do you ever feel like everything that comes out of your mouth (or off your fingertips) is about as exciting as bologna on white?

That's how I'm feeling right now. My apologies. Feel free to pretend this never happened. Blame Jim and Pam.

But by all means, make this soup*. I know, it looks kind of nasty. I make this all of the time and I almost always take its portrait, and it always, always just looks ick. It's not at all photogenic, this one.

In Cory's words: "It doesn't do it justice."

I couldn't have said it better myself. It tastes SO good. And it's such a cinch to make. And it's as hearty as the Winter is long.

Do you ever wish I would fall back into my previously semi-organized ways and write a coherent, topical post?

Me, too.

But people, this is my life. It's not always organized. If you could see the current state of my living room, you would know what I'm talking about. I'm wearing brown sweatpants with my favorite J Crew button-down and I don't care who knows it. My kid routinely leaves the house with a woman's headband as a "sweatband". And he almost never matches.

I just wrote such a nonsensical sentence that I had no choice but to delete it.

You can thank me for that later.

*Stuffed Pepper Soup
Brown 1-1.5 lbs. hamburger with 3 chopped bell peppers and one chopped onion.
Drain.
Return to pot and add two cans tomato soup and one large can of undrained diced tomatoes.
Add 2-3 cups cooked brown rice.
Simmer until heated through.
Salt to taste.

  2. Seriously, your kid makes me smile. That sweatband is so awesome... Xanadu all the way! I love it when the kids just do their own thing. My youngest likes to sport the headband the same way, like she just did aerobics. Classic!

  8. You just make me smile. I'm so glad you are my friend. I don't watch the office but watched the last 15 mins last night. I'm a wedding cryer too. But also not at mine. Well I cried at my first one. Sobbed. Was on the verge of hysteria. Shouldn't that have told me something?
I'm making broccoli and corn chowder today. Soup weather has arrived here in the midwest, hasn't it?

  9. I love to make green pepper soup, it's always yummy! Who cares if it doesn't look pretty, right?! :) And I can't wait to see Jim and Pam's wedding! But we need to catch up on the previous episodes first.

Calvin in the sweatband made me laugh. So cute.

  10. Your posts make me smile! You are so real. I love your line about life being as exciting as bologna on white. Sounds just like my life.

Calvin's obsession with the sweatband is too cute. I love that you've documented to show him someday when he is older. Otherwise, he might not believe you! (hahaha)

    Enjoy the weekend!

  11. First off, I teared up too. But, weirdly mostly directed toward the office members silly dancers, something about their zany camaraderie and secret love for each other is moving. And of course, Pam and Jim make it seem *so* real. He is TDF!!!! I need to make the pepper soup next week. I can't believe I haven't yet. I need to give that recipe to Glo. She'd love it. I'm on it. Love ya!

    Absolutely love Stuffed Pepper Soup.

Keep rambling. It makes the rest of us look good. :-)

I want your son. I don't know how you control yourself around him. I would have to smash him to bits.

  14. I cry at weddings too. Much better than laughing! I hate it when the bride and groom are up there giggling. Such a important moment...they should take it very seriously! Your soup looked good...yum. Have a great weekend Shannon:)

your little one is adorable, it that your kitty? She has the same fluffy tail that my parents cat does, and the same coloring, sorry I know that had nothing to do with your post, but it caught my eye! Love the mums, just perfect!

  20. I'm not very photogenic either and people like me (I think!)...so some of the best things just don't make pretty pictures...that's all there is to it, as my mother used to say! I have tried that soup, had it at a restaurant once and had to come home and try it on my own. YUMMO! I love your rambling posts, they make me feel normal, and your little Kung Fu fighther? Adorable!
    XOXO
